You lie awake doing the math and everything adds up to wealth and fortune. After all, numbers don’t lie. Counting the numbers imagining what you could do with all that money. Love sure breaks hearts but businesses break even more hearts! Raised expectations followed by massive disappointments in many cases. Massive debts, unreliable people, disappointing numbers, tested passions and broken dreams. It helps to be positive but it saves a whole lot more to be realistic. In the calculations, do you account for the fact that not everything goes according to plan? There is a… Continue reading →
It seems everyone these days is trying to get out of the rat race. I keep seeing all these articles shared on Facebook and Twitter about the “golden handcuffs” and the endless fruitless rat race. I guess they are supposed to open our eyes; make us stop being fooled by the flashy cars and surface lifestyles that hide the quiet desperation of employees worldwide. It’s a trap, they claim. Do I agree? Can I plead the fifth? I’ll be Switzerland on this one. Picture a lab rat running around in circles in a maze or… Continue reading →
The 20s is when our lives start taking shape. Baby fat shading, acne clearing and meeting boys is one of the good things that happen at this crucial age. Below are some of the things I wish someone had told me when I was 19 but then life wouldn’t be as interesting if it had a manual. Experience, they say is the best teacher so here goes. Embrace Healthy Eating Our bodies are like a machine; take care of it by servicing it and you will experience fewer breakdowns. Long life isn’t really guaranteed but… Continue reading →
Well, it is known that ambition can creep as well as soar.” Edmund Burke ‘When I grow up I want to conquer the world, I’ve got to have my own job, my own car, and my own crib. I’ve got to be my own woman, totally independent.’ A group of young girls at a teenage workshop made these strong statements. It exhilarated me to see the determination that these young women had. Despite my support for their enthusiasm at living fruitful lives, it got my mind wondering of the older generation. Women who have stood… Continue reading →
Going into business is sometimes a daunting project, even at the best of times. You are leaving all that’s familiar…and laid back – the monthly pay check, hours spent making decisions (whose overall effect seemed like somebody else’s business and not yours, in case of any losses), stopping in on friends for that Marketing pitch, lazy Fridays where some take off early from work under the guise of out-of-office business deals etc. Safe… that’s what employment was always about. A safety net…this new frontier called ‘CEO/Boss’ is now unfamiliar territory. There’s business lingo that comes… Continue reading →
After going through a harrowing quarter-life crisis and FINALLY finding my purpose, what I can say is that this has been such an eye-opening experience for me in so many ways. People, embrace your quarter-life and mid-life and three-quarter life crises! They open your eyes to new dimensions! At that point in my life (and even now), I wondered how or why someone would go to school, study, go to university and specialize in a certain course, say, business, do well in it, get a job related to the profession, then a year later, hate… Continue reading →
There are many experiences we go through as career working women some of which we feel we are prepared for and others not so much. I guess the main reason I say this is because it can at times be challenging when you are trying to make your career work in your favour and the opposite seems to be happening. I recently decided to move jobs for many different reasons. Having written about already going through the pink slip experience, I never thought I would be writing my experience about resigning. I resigned for many… Continue reading →
I am at a place where I don’t know anything. Coming from someone who has always known what she wanted from life, this is scary, to say the least. Further studies, well, those have been put on hold as I decide what it is I even want to do, if there is anything I even want to do! My job, well, let’s just say me and Job are not so in love anymore. Somewhere along the way, my love for dear Job faded. When I wake up in the morning, I don’t think fondly of… Continue reading →
When we were young we had dreams and ambitions that were boundless. “I wana be a lawyer, teacher, doctor, pilot etc” were the songs that we used to sing merrily with a clear mental image of yourself as a profession in your dream field. Let’s just say 90% didn’t turn out as expected. Life with its usual irony took over and we all learned the hard way that not all dreams come true. Some of us gave up along the way, some passed away- RIP and some just well sunk into despair consequently hard drugs,… Continue reading →
