Urban Pastoralist

Back in the married days I had a number of friends going through the usual rough patches in their relationships and, you know, we talked about almost everything. The truly unhappy shared their plans to leave and we, clue less at the time, marveled at their resolve and determination while pitying them. How could they possibly think they could leave their husbands and survive! Well I soon found out. Since my marriage ended 6 years ago I have moved 7 times. And it’s been quite the journey. Move 1 The kids, dogs, staff and I… Continue reading →

Where did my baby go?

Where did my baby go?

I used to be a proud pet owner until a few weeks ago. At first it didn’t really register that I had indeed lost the cat. It happened over a very busy weekend full of never ending wageni and chores. So it wasn’t until two days later, when I finally came up for air that it finally sunk in that my cat was gone. Taking care of a cat in Nairobi is fairly difficult. Aside from the usual feeding and petting, you have to find a place for it to ‘make pee-pee and poo-poo’. You… Continue reading →

Parental Guidance Is Advised

Parental Guidance Is Advised

I was watching TV on Saturday morning, hoping to catch some funny cartoons to remind me of my not-so-distant childhood (cough cough, but do I say :)) but what I came across was disturbing, to say the least. When did cartoons become so…how shall I put it (at the risk of sounding redundant)…disturbing? There was a cartoon programme which showed an old lady speaking to a monstrous creature whose dialect I could hardly make out. Is this what kids are watching nowadays? Monsters, dragons, morphing humans turning into anything from a Transformers-like gadget to a… Continue reading →

Squished Boobs et al.

Squished Boobs et al.

When did squished boobs become a fashion statement? You know the look: beautiful formal/evening dress, tight on “all the right places” and about two sizes too small for the wearer’s double wares which get squished up and out, looking like muffin tops. I’m not the most fashion forward person in the world but I at least know that when parts of your body are literally pouring out, it isn’t sexy. Or is it? This got me thinking about other random things I’ve been wondering about like: When did it become ok to begin written sentences with the the… Continue reading →

Babies make the world go round

Babies make the world go round

I have this neighbour who has a really hot bike. I wish I was sharp enough to say it has XYZ horsepower, carries ABC cc and has a carburator distributor thingamawhatsit, but all I know is it’s hot, and it’s black. I’m so enamoured with that bike that every time he rolls it by, I give a compliment. To the bike, not the guy. He parks it outside my door, so I’ve seen him move it a dozen times, but I have not once looked at his face. And no, it’s not the helmet. One… Continue reading →

This Woman’s Worth?

This Woman’s Worth?

These last few days, I found out what my apparent worth is. First, it was my male cousin – who has been drunk every single time we’ve met this year, btw. Anyway, he found it in his charge to give me advice for my life; something about purchasing land and blah blah blah. He wasn’t done yet though: he leaned closer to me, stinky breath and all, and half whispered that he was “ahead of me” because he had two children and I had none. Oooouuuucccchhhhh!!!! Did that hurt you just a bit? I was momentarily stunned and… Continue reading →

Does it still take a village to raise a child?

Does it still take a village to raise a child?

Ok, so first of all, happy belated Easter. Clearly I’m in a whole other time zone coz Easter totally passed me by. I did however have a chance to go out of town and visit some relaz. While there, I observed something that I thought I’d put to a vote with my readers so please indulge me. I was around several children of varying ages; 2, 5 and 10. Let’s just say that their behavior left a lot to be desired. In fact, I turned to another relative and declared them to be my most… Continue reading →
