"How comes that some women are more successful than others?".A friend asked.I answered this question with a question."How comes that a 'PASS/2nd Lower person' employs a 1st class person yet the 1st class guy is smarter than the average person?".The friend just froze. The answer is simple."There is a great disconnect between business and academics".Example: During an interview,I might ask you,"What have you done?/tell me about yourself".The most feasible option to many people would be to utter jargon[I have done Programming in Java,I can networking,I can do IC integration,I have a certification in CISCO/this and that].To me, the value that you can add to my organization is the one that matters. How can you help improve my business? How can you add value to the organization so that my shareholders get more dividends??With whatever that you have learnt in the academia world, how do you apply that to make my organization's operations more efficient, rather than jargon.

The funny thing is, we are exposed to the same things/environment.The business guys sees opportunity that they optimize. And since they are not technology savvy enough, they will approach a techie guy, offer to pay the guy like 40% and the job will be done within a very short period of time. The business guy will be making huge amounts of money and he actually does nothing.

Consider the next scenario: 3 guys watching cartoons: 1st guy: this person believes that watching cartoons is childish and dismisses everything.Let alone what you will learn from watching a cartoon.

2nd guy: This person enjoys the cartoon and he is even willing to pay for the cartoon.Just as many people would like to buy a whole "season of a series/movie".

3rd guy: This person watches the cartoon, right there, he notices that the cartoon is in English.Rethinks about the environment that he/she is in: Kenya, aaaaaha We like Kiswahili and sheng[Besides, all Kenyan drama programmes in all our local TVs are in Kiswahili],all the marketing slogans are done in Sheng and Kiswahili[ponyoka, bamba, milli,GPange], I mean, this is an opportunity.
Why dont I rebrand this cartoon,do voice over in Kiswahili and Sheng, create story likes and some thematic approach, pay the originator some royalties?

Good idea. The person rushes to the Gurus aka the technical guys: The guy is so much "Jazzed" that he explains its cool features that he only explains in technical terms and almost in binary 0's and 1's.The business guy "floats and hangs on all the crazy things that the techie is saying as he is taking a detour to explain a simple thing via digression route".

The product is done within weeks and since market launching is vital, the business guy does a very creative awareness campaign to launch the product.Due to its popularity, alot of companies and media houses comes forward compete for the product which the business guy sells at super abnormal profit and goes ahead to call it a "KILLER IDEA".

See , guys, all the 3 people were exposed to the same environment/scene.Cartoon watching.

My point is: If we have the connect the business and academia bridge, then we will look back and say confidently,"Together we made it.Even though our backs were against the wall"
