Let’s be real, men can’t resist a woman drenched in sexy, now add on some irresistibly smoking lingerie and you have putty in your hands. To be honest i can’t blame them. I tend to believe there is something irresistible about a woman in lace, ribbons, leather, and sheer material that will always drive any man crazy.

Sexy lingerie lets you hold the secret to obtaining complete submission of your man, while opening the door to your sexual intimacy. For this reason, it is essential for every woman have specific lingerie items in her knickers drawer.

Lingerie is a fact of life. But it isn’t a fact that shopping for it has to be a chore. There are 6 lingerie essentials that every woman must have. Whether it’s a fancy evening out, or a relaxed afternoon indoors, these 6 pieces are absolute time savers. So if you’ve ever felt like you just didn’t have the right thing to wear under your clothes, this article is definitely meant for you!

First up lets talk Bra’s. There’s nothing like knowing that your twins are looking their best for a confidence boost! Remember that your underwear provides the foundations for your outerwear and so you need to think about which bra is appropriate for what you are wearing.

1. Seamless panties
There is nothing i find disruptive and un-ladylike as visible panty lines. With that said, its definite that seamless undies are the way to go.

2. T-shirt Bra
We all need one of these don’t we?? T-shirt bras are perfect for wearing under anything tight, close-fitting, or thin. Because the bra is constructed of one, seamless piece, you won’t end up with those annoying boob-shaped lines under your clothes. Plus, the moulded cups make makes it a great piece for evening wear and shaping without adding padding or bulk.

3. The Nude Bra
The one thing i see almost every day on the streets of Nairobi is women wearing a white bra underneath a white blouse or top. Some think it’s sexy maybe it is all the same this brings us to the second must have. The nude bra.

Contrary to common belief, the nude bra is a wardrobe essential for women of all skin tones. Many people equate nude with one beige or tan shade, but, in reality, nude is whatever matches your skintone. This is a perfect on for when you want to wear your light or white colored clothing.

4. The Multiway Bra
The Multiway bra is the third must have. In this day and age of women’s fashion changing practically on a daily basis, it would be obvious to say that not all your clothing has sleeves or straps thus its needless to point out that your normal everyday bra just won’t cut it.

We all need a convertible bra, there is no two ways about it. The best convertible bras are able to accommodate strapless, halter, and low-back styles with some brands even having crisscross or one shoulder options another tip is to look for a bra with a deep, plunging front, which is perfect for v-necks.

5. Shapewear
Lets be honest not all women were blessed with curves in all the right places, but what we were blessed with is shape wear. Why?? Shapewear smoothes, firms, and most of all shapes giving you the picture perfect hourglass figure whenever you need it. They come in different types from the slimming tank to the high waist thigh shaper, not only are they pretty but functional as well.

6. Sexy Babydoll
You can not say you have lingerie unless you have that one sexy babydoll that hits him right in between the eyes & you have him eating off the palm of your hands. However, much as we all want that sexy little number you have to consider a couple of factors.

First of you need to think comfort. There is no way you will turn your man on if you are fidgeting with lingerie straps that are not the right fit of worse yet a lingerie outfit that does not fit altogether.

Consider the purpose for which you would like the piece to serve. Are you looking for something with a theme, hence lingerie costumes or is it just a piece that you can slip anytime of day & whip up some serious magic. It should be soft, simple and above all else flattering.

I hope this article helps you with your lingerie purchases, both now and in the future.

Well, when you move to a more formal professional service company, you realise you have to step up your wardrobe. Its not that you have a bad wardrobe, mismatched clothes or tired clothes, its that perhaps you haven’t worked in such a formal organisation before so your was abit of a newbie with the suits. So my first question to you before you read any further is, ‘what’s your work dressing style saying about you?’

The biggest mentality i am sure many are familiar with is the ‘I don’t care what people think, about how i look so long as i’m comfotable’ The problem is, yes you may not care, but the perception made about you within the first few instances of meeting someone will make you care… A LOT! Besides why else is it that people dress to impress for an interview? They need to impress enough to get the job, that’s why.

So you decide a wardrobe overhaul is needed, considering you are coming from a more casual dress organisation. What could you do to make this drastic change?

1. Suits can be exciting
I hated suits, the starched shirts the stiffness of the fabric, pleats, tweed, carrying around a jacket and i never could find a nice suit that fitted me perfectly (ever seen those men in town who have on over sized suits? Or the trouser is shorter than the rest of the suit?) There is power in a suit, i can say that for sure. Its not that its my first time wearing one but i can assure you it now makes me feel very achieved and confident.

Formal wear is important, because you are representing the brand that you are working for. The brand will always want a particular reputation maintained especially to the public, because a brand name can build or break a company. It doesn’t mean that you always have to wear a boring black suit, because more people are embracing color and many designs exist for whatever taste you have. Whether your into skirts, trousers or dresses believe me a suit can make a difference, but my secret is, a good tailor makes ALL the difference.

2. Heels don’t always have to be uncomfortable
Well, for ladies, the heels make you stand out more and add to confidence, because they feel amazing when strutting your stuff into a meeting or a clients office. However lets be honest, not all of us can survive in high stilettos the whole day especially if your on your feet for most of the day. More importantly though is to get a heel that you know you can walk in well. Ever seen a chic in town crossing the road like her knees are about to collapse thanks to the 6 inch she is trying so hard to walk in that is pinching her toes to bits? I have.

When taking public transport it is simply unwise to wear high heels, especially because you have to walk long distances. Carry a pair of flats or even ngomas for your transport phase and change your shoes when you get to the office, we all know you have that big hang bag anyway!

3. Client facing
Clients feel more secure dealing with someone who looks dressed appropriately for the job. You cannot imagine a client dealing with a guy in jeans and a t-shirt (or un-ironed clothes) trying to secure a deal, realistically the client will prefer not to be speaking business with a person dressed like that. Its important to impress because that then reflects on the impressive services or products that you will offer, people will take you more seriously depending on the way you are dressed. Yes its a sad reality that we as humans are so material even in our thoughts and actions, but its life, you sink or swim.

4. Accessories
Well lets be honest, some women tend to over accessorize, i mean if its not the dangling earrings with glitter, its the twenty or so clinking bracelets on the arm or its the make up like your headed for a photo shoot, all too much action going around. Save all the over the top accessories for the weekend, for the office less of accessories is more, keep it simple.

Trying to keep it chic and professional at the same time can actually be fun!

We all do it. A lot of times, we lie about it. I’m talking about mitumba.

Sadly, the state of our local clothing industry is far from the point where I would be inclined to buy Kenya build Kenya. Well, I might be content with an abysmal lack of choice in tea towels from Nakuru textiles, but when it comes to things I actually care about – like my clothes, accessories and house furnishings – I insist on choice and creativity. And where better than in the second-hand clothes markets of Kenya, where even the poorest of the poor become connoisseurs of clothing from around the world – as long as they don’t mind the tiny fact that someone else used it first.

I love mitumba-ing, or to give it a hipper name, thrifting. While everyone and their mother has bought mitumba, there are always a few ladies who are consistently “lucky”. Well, I’ve come to realize that it’s not luck. It’s learned knowledge and an innate sense of style. In my opinion, there’s the Basic and Advanced Mitumba strategy. Coco Chanel’s words: “Fashion fades, only style remains the same.” I’m somewhere between the two, somewhat fashionable, trying to cultivate a real sense of style.

Basic Mitumba-ing
If you’re starting at zero, I’ve learned two basic strategies. My first, kinda lame, strategy is to always go for clothes that are near the outside edge of the market and are on hangers. This is as opposed to the “chagua” piles. They are more expensive, because the sellers know well what’s in at the moment. I’ve done fairly well using this technique, and there’s the added bonus of knowing that the resellers choose clothes that are in fairly good repair, and many launder and press them.

Strategy two is to become a student of fashion. This was my college-days strategy, buying magazines and browsing the internet, and finding out what’s in. This is like cramming for an exam. Even in the chagua piles, with your learned knowledge you can snag good finds.

Advanced Mitumba-ing
This is where I’m at. Trying to cultivate a true sense of style. Another Coco quote: “Fashion is not something that exists in dresses only. Fashion is in the sky, in the street, fashion has to do with ideas, the way we live, what is happening.” This is part of my furaha project this year. Truly discovering my personal aesthetic. Part of it has been going with my gut feeling, ignoring the “where the hell will you ever wear that!?!” feeling that usually keeps me in conformist clothing. Just last week, I stumbled upon the most gorgeous cobalt blue quilted handbag with a lush red velvet lining and thick brass chain strap. (700 bob from Toi Market). At the time I was looking for a giant black or brown work bag, and I stood there for about 10 minutes trying to convince myself to JUST DO IT. And I did!

Another time, I ended up bringing out my almost forgotten home-science skills. I found a dress in a beautiful fabric, but it was one of those maxi length, short-sleeved 90s horrors with buttons all the way down the front. I snipped it in half across, did a halfway decent job at removing the sleeves and now it’s a short sweet sun dress. Yet another time, I bought a green blouse with an interesting white leaf print for 5 bob. It was definitely too old and ugly to wear, but the print was great. I didn’t know what to do with it fora while, until I had the inspiration to cut strips of it and wrap it around circular plastic earrings to create a fab pair of fabric-covered earrings.

It’s fairly hit-or-miss, but I’m learning and growing this year. One aspect of my Furaha Project this year is growing my creative self, and so far this is a great way of doing it.

There are many types of swimsuits in the market, and some will flatter your shape better than others will. Despite the many styles, the bathing suit will be either a one piece or a two-piece swimsuit. Cut, design, print, and fabric, will all play together to either enhance your shape or not. If you choose swimwear according to your body type, you have a better chance of liking the fit and how it enhances your shape.

Whether you prefer a one piece or a two-piece, you can find a style that fits your figure. If you are an avid swimmer, you will feel more comfortable with a one-piece bathing suit. Therefore, consider the type of activity as well. Always go for fabrics that can stretch and give you some support, as well as breathable fabrics. Some bottoms are too loose and will keep riding up, no matter if they are the right size.

One great solution is to buy separates that you can mix and match. Some women have problems finding a swimsuit in a size that will fit well top and bottom; however, if you choose separates you can find the perfect fit. You might wear one size on top and another at the bottom; this is common with pear shape women.

If you are small on top, separates will benefit you as well, but stick with a top that has some padding, and lift to enhance your bust. Bandeau tops look good on women with smaller busts only; if you have a big bust try to avoid a bandeau top. In addition, if you are heavy on top, you will need to wear an underwire top for lift and support. Look for one piece that will enhance your cleavage and offer support, especially if it ties in the back of your neck. Tops that have thin straps might not work well for the full figure woman as they will not offer the needed support, and may contribute to a saggy bust look. Keep the straps as wide as you can, sporty tank tops offer great support. Match it to a cute bottom and you are set for the beach.

When choosing a bathing suit it is all about balancing how your figure looks. Women who want to conceal a tummy may benefit from pieces that have built in tummy control fabric, and a waist enhancement such as scrunched fabric. One-piece styles will flatter best.

If you want to create the illusion of longer legs, try a high cut bottom, use fabrics that lengthen the silhouette such as vertical stripes, and try to wear a top that will get the attention away from the bottom part. Women with long legs can try horizontal stripes and a bottom that has a skirt or ruffles. Avoid anything that will lengthen your legs or torso more, such as vertical lines. A balance can be found with short style bottoms or a connected two-piece that looks like a one piece, but is open at the sides.

Overall, play with different fabrics and styles until you feel the one that balances your body.

Everyone’s talking about the maxi dress, the hottest frock of the season.

Everyone’s talking about the maxi dress, the hottest frock of the season. It’s the complete opposite of last year’s mini dress, and it’s proving to be the dress for all ages, shapes, and sizes. Indeed, anybody can wear maxi dresses; the trick is not to let this quintessential woman’s dress wear you.

The Maxi Dress for The Mini Woman
Maxi dresses look naturally great on stars like Angelina Jolie and Kate Moss with their willowy frames and legs as long as skyscrapers – that’s a given. The height-challenged, however, would have to give it a bit more thought. A dress such as the maxi with long, flowing lines have the tendency to easily swamp a smaller frame. It is, therefore, a must for a petite woman to pay close attention while shopping for a maxi dress.

The skirt is the biggest challenge for a woman with a smaller frame. Maxi dresses generally sport diaphanous skirts that could shelter a brood of children, usually in the flowing gypsy style. The voluminous style of the maxi, can however make your profile look wider and shorter. A close-fitting, well-cut skirt in a bias or A-line cut will keep this casual or formal dress proportionate to your small frame.

For the small frame, follow the principle of keeping the top part as close to the body as possible. A halter dress with a fitted top is usually a safe bet. The empire cut is another choice you can go for. This flatters most figures, so you can avoid being drowned by the dress. Maximize the maxi look with a cotton halter neck dress.

The whole idea of the maxi is to add height, not take it away, so it’s a good idea to accessorise this day or evening dress with chunky-heeled wedges and platforms, or strappy stilettos. Compliment the maxi dress with accessories like chunky jewelery, over sized sunglasses, and large bags. This allows you to maximize the look; although, do take care not to overdo it.

The Maxi Dress for The Maxi Lady
The great thing about the maxi dress is that it’s very kind to the average woman, including the well-endowed. Without much painstaking thought, even larger woman can look feminine. With a maxi dress, you can subtly disguise an ample derri? under gracefully flowing skirts. Accessorise with a thick banded belt too for that great effect.

The fashion world has been taken over by a particular item this season: the leggings. Let us face it, this is a very comfortable garment which can be easily dressed down, and dressed up with just the help of a few accessories. No wonder it has take then world by storm.

However another garment has now hit the stores, which is definitely competing for the spotlight! Enter the jeggings. If you have never heard the term before, do not worry, this is a term many might still be unfamiliar with. Jeggings are essential a style of leggings, in particular the denim leggings. The term has been coined by merging the word ‘jeans’ and ‘leggings’… hence jeggings!

Jeans are a staple item in everyone’s wardrobe these days, though some women might find jeans to be a bit uncomfortable at times. On days when feeling bloated, many women complain that their jeans feel too tight at the waist. The zipper at times also feels uncomfortable, and at times actually ruins the fabric of tight fitting tops, when the fabric rubs against the exposed zipper. So although jeans are a favorite, there is definitely room for improvement.

That’s where jeggings come in. They offer a lot of comfort, and some women might actually be ready to ditch their jeans and switch to leggings, especially if they are into skinny jeans. Jeggins come in many different variations, fabrics and tones. You can find dark blue one, light blue, acid wash styles, as well as black denim jeggings. Some type of jeggings are made out of real denim, whilst other are made from soft touch fabric, so they look like jeans, but are actually much more comfortable and smooth.

Furthermore, there are some styles of jeggings which include the thread and stitching details a regular pair of jeans would, including for instance fake stitching at the back to mimic back pockets. Then there are other styles which are completely stitching free.

There are various types of jeggings on the market nowadays, and the more time passes the more styles are being created. Jeggings can definitely be a breath of fresh air to women who like regular jeans but find them uncomfortable. Of course they definitely make a nice extra addition to all female closets.

Human psychology shall forever remain a mystery to me, it’s funny how our minds are tricked into doing something because others are doing it, or because you will be considered cool once you do it. When it comes to fashion, there are items which seem to flood the market over a certain period of time. Our minds are tricked into purchasing these items because everyone across the globe seems top have one and we don’t want to be left behind. I have to admit that women are the worst victims when it comes to fashion fads, we spend so much money buying something that we will only wear for a few months and if you happen to be a laggard you’ll probably get to wear them a couple of times.

Sometimes those items that are considered to be in fashion are not suitable for everyone, yet we still insist on buying them anyway. For example the jumpsuit seems to have crawled back from the cave it went to in the early 90s or was it late 80s. I think the only girl who looks good in a jump suit is one who’s is petite, if you know you are above size 10 don’t even think of purchasing one, no offense to the big girls am a size 12 and I am yet to see anyone my size looking good in a jump suit.

Last year there was a yellow breakout and suddenly every woman’s favourite colour seemed to be yellow, from head bands, to earrings to clothes, shoes you name it there seemed to be one in yellow. Yellow is a very bright colour and one should be very careful when matching head to toe yellow, especially if you have got very dark skin. The yellow outbreak according to my rating was the worst fashion fad in the last decade, unless you can come up with others.

The Mohawk hairdo is another fad which was completely abused; sometimes I thought there was a peacock or even a real Mohawk walking in front of me. I have to admit the hair do is quite good if it’s on the right head. Not all shapes can handle a Mohawk; I think some hair designers should be sued for allowing their clients to look so ridiculous it’s a hilarious, but pitiful site at the same time.

I thought monster bags were a fad but boy was I wrong, I think they get bigger and uglier by the season. I do own a big bag but not big enough to carry a human in it. My bag fits everything I need so I fail to understand what women carry in these bags, could someone please tell me?

I believe that everyone should create an identity, it is not wrong to get engulfed in fads but make sure it is something you look good and feel good in. Having you own style makes you one of a kind and not just part of the list, and at the same time it reduces the pressure of having to own what every other woman in the world owns.

I’ve been trying to get my hair coloured for a while, and I finally gave up after four tries and three thousand shillings. I didn’t want to pour more money down the sink. Plus, I was afraid my hair would fall off. Hair colour can do that sometimes.

The saga began with a mix of two colours – ultraviolet black and aubergine. This was followed by some food colour, more aubergine, and some wailing with mirrors.

The first time I dyed it, the hairdresser said it was coloured, but my baby girl said otherwise. I couldn’t see purple either.

The second time, it started out purple, but darkened with the food colouring. And the third time, they let it stay on too long, so the effect was fade to black.

After each session, the hair-people swore that my hair had turned, but I was dissatisfied. They told me to be patient, and that the colour would ‘shout’ after a few weeks.

Some days later, my baby finally admitted my hair was a little tinted. I didn’t believe her.

Even when some random dude using roller blades on the road to Kibera made a comment, I wasn’t having it. He said my hair was really pretty, and asked if I’d bathed it in Kiwi.

Well, not in those words exactly, but that was the idea.

Later, I discovered the hair looks purple in certain lights [and on certain mirrors. Specifically, flourescent light and teeny weeny bathroom glass. Also, bank-queue reflections]. There are moments when it screams violet, other times it looks a little off-black, which is a pretty good colour for me.

Yesterday, I was in Eastleigh shopping for a buibui. I walked into several stalls and had all sorts of people staring at my head – including one guy who was selling by translation. He didn’t speak a word of English or Swahili … which made bargaining rather difficult.

Maybe that was the point.

I figured the reason they were staring is that my head was exposed. Women in that neighbourhood are generally covered. I didn’t discover the problem until someone said, ‘Your hair is really purple!’ The comment was promptly followed by, ‘It really works for you.’

I’ve been thinking of growing my hair longer and turning it black, or maybe burgundy. I want to grow it so that I can style it and do things with it, now that I actually want to. I’ll mostly want to coil it up in those spirally curls and then pile it up in dread-ful version of that tousled up crumpled-sheet hairdo.

But I got so many comments on my tiny purple hair that I’m reconsidering. Plus, you can’t have long hair that’s purple … that would just be weird. And I’m not even sure I can still get aubergine at Tuskys. Oh well.

In other news, I’ve been slacking off at the gym. I decided to sleep in for one morning and somehow it stretched to a week! I didn’t think it made much difference, especially since I was sweating much more during workouts, so I figured I was doing something right. But during the post-skiving stretch session, I was screaming like a pregnant cow. Apparently a few days skipped equal a whole lot of pain. *sulk*

I was watching Dr Phil. [Yes, I occasionally watch Dr Phil. I didn't say I was proud of it.] He was talking about weight loss and weight gain, and he said to lose weight, you have to figure out why you eat. Some people use food as a crutch, so no matter how many diets or fads they use, they stay plus-sized.

I eat to make me happy. I’m naturally depressive, so I use food as a pick-me-up. It’s the one thing that consistently makes me smile. So after a long day, or a fight, or a sad movie, or some good news, or even a bout of PMS, I grab a plate. I’ll usually pick cookies or chocolate or ugali, blue-banded rice, sweet potatoes, and thick savoury stew. Yum. And because I’m eating to be happy, the portions increase. It isn’t enough to just taste.

To help my ‘diet’ along, I need to be conscious of when I eat. I should feed when I’m hungry – and only when I’m hungry. Otherwise I’m piling on more calories than I work off, and all the gymming on the planet will do nothing for my kilo-count … or my aspiring hair.

I should drink lots of water, and when I get sad, instead of hunting for Dairy Milk or Maryland cookies, I should write a poem, dance to rock song, or find me some salsa.

Yeah. That’s gonna happen.

How many men do you know who can resist the temptation of a woman in sexy lingerie? Probably not many; but do you blame them? It seems there is something irresistible about a woman in lace, ribbons, leather, and sheer material that drives a man crazy. Sexy lingerie lets you hold the secret to obtaining complete submission of your man, opening the door to your sexual intimacy.

Wearing lingerie can make any woman look oh-so-irresistible, and sexy in ways she could never imagine. The varieties of lingerie that are available to women now are much different than what we were used to years ago. From costumes, to holiday themes, to lingerie that fulfills your wildest fantasy; it’s all finally at your fingertips, and as sexy as ever.

Girls want to be complimented. So what better way to attract compliments and attention than to buy new sexy lingerie, wait for your man to come home from work, and enjoy the sight of his jaw dropping to the floor. He’ll shower you in compliments about how amazing you look, and what a confidence boost that will bring! Men love confident women, and women love to look and feel sexy. Sexy lingerie allows for both of you to get what you want, and have a great time doing it!

Improving your love life is a concern that is presented in many relationships. The secret is to keep things fun and new, and new lingerie is a way to do just that! Sex isn’t just about the act; it’s about teasing your man, and making him unable to resist you. Tease him all day by sending cute, flirtatious text messages, and surprise him at home with some red hot sexy lingerie that he hasn’t seen before. It’ll be sure to send sparks flying in your bedroom tonight!

Bedtime Flirt will help you find the right lingerie to make you feel like a bombshell in any outfit, for any occasion. For a “special” night planned with your man, go for a lacy thong and push-up bra with tactically placed flowers. Planning a night for the two of you at home? Go for sexy lingerie from the “baby doll” or “princess” collections, allowing you to feel like a million pounds while still maintaining the comfort factor. For a night out on the town, go for lingerie that pushes your limits, such as a corset, a bustier, or a push-up bra, all guaranteed to bring out the sexy, adventurous side of you.

Sexy lingerie can also make for the perfect gift. Not only from a husband or significant other, but for your friend who’s getting married, or that co-worker you’d like to get to open up a little. There’s nothing that makes a woman feel more confident and sexy than her first garter belt and sexy, lacy bra. If you’re anything like me, you can’t even own sexy lingerie without dying to watch someone else’s jaw drop when they see you in the most flattering, sexy garment available. There’s no better gift than the gift of lingerie to assure that special lady in your life that she is desirable, sexy and full of life.

Over the last century only one type of shoe has remained timeless in a woman’s wardrobe, the boot. The boot has been around since the 16th and 17th century and was mainly worn in the North America due to rough terrain. However it was popularized by the American cowboys in the 18th century and up to today it is widely associated with the Wild Wild West.

Over the years the boot has evolved, and once worn out of necessity has become a fashion item in our wardrobes. Boots come in various materials, shapes and sizes but over the years there have been three main designs of the boot: knee length, ankle length and thigh length.

At least one in every five women owns a pair or pairs of boots, but we tend to wear them all wrong or not wear them at all because we are confused on what to pair them up with. Here are a few tips on which boot to wear with what.

Ankle length boots
These kinds of boots are best worn with skinny jeans especially if they round toe or sharp pointed. The box shaped ones can be paired up with a pair of formal office pants. Another way to wear this kind of boots is to wear them with short skirt/ dress (just above the knee) paired with black or opaque tights.

Ankle length boots are however not suitable for short people as the make calves appear thicker and legs shorter.

Knee length boots
This is probably the best boot design and with very few limitations. They can be worn with skinny jeans, best over skinny jeans. They can also be worn with skirts and dresses both long and short. They also look very chic and sexy when worn with shorts paired with stockings for that night out.

However you should avoid wearing the knee length boots with baggy clothing as it creates a ballooning effect and I’m sure no woman wants that.

Thigh high boots
This is a design full of controversy and you are sure to get a few heads turning when wearing them. Thigh high boots have long been associated so much with dominatrix and eroticism, but that should not stop you from wearing them.

The best way to wear them is to pair them with shorts or over skinny jeans. However, to look best in them, buy those that go just above the knee not the kind that go all the way to the waist, as they may send out the wrong message.

Taking all those tips into consideration, wear your boots the right way and stop doing so much injustice to this timeless shoe.

‘If you got it flaunt it’ that’s one of the new age sayings. Well not everything should be flaunted at least not in my books of fashion. Am talking about cleavage, call me old fashioned, backward or whatever you wish but I like to consider myself conservative. I have nothing against showing off a bit off bust cleavage its actually flattering especially during a girl’s night out, cocktail parties or other funky events. Bust cleavage will be totally unflattering if your twins are spilling off your outfit and that isn’t a pretty sight.

Although we like talking about freedom of expression and freedom of dressing sometimes we go beyond boundaries and end up looking clueless when it comes to dressing sexy. Just because you saw it on a window of a boutique and loved it, it doesn’t mean that it fits.

Now that I am talking about cleavage, I also have a big problem with ‘butt’ cleavage; I fail to understand why anyone in their right mind would walk around showing off their lower cleavage. It’s funny how we are convinced that we look good in those low rise jeans, yet walking in them is a problem. You cannot even pick up anything or sit down without showing off your cleavage.

It does not matter if you look like Beyonce’s twin or Jennifer Lopez’s long lost cousin, strutting your stuff along the busy streets of Nairobi, but so long as your butt ‘crack’ I mean cleavage is showing, you don’t look so good.

Just because it looks goods on the model in the fashion magazine, and you saw it in the shop’s window display, doesn’t mean it fits, so please don’t try to squeeze yourself in jeans or tops/dresses that are a size smaller. ‘No one will notice’ we like to convince each other or ourselves, but some things like cleavage spillage cannot go unnoticed , especially if they are parts which define the WOMAN.

Next time you go shopping make sure you buy clothes which fit, ask for an opinion from your friends and look at yourself at the mirror. As a friend give honest opinions, be your sisters keeper, and with the right fitting clothes you will definitely get glances for all the right reasons.

I’m seated on the couch one Saturday morning, having my breakfast and watching crazy cartoons. This particular one gets my attention; the setting is in ancient times. The men are fighting and killing each other in these nice gladiator shoes and even after the repetitive in between commercials, I keep thinking about those gladiators. (Yes, it’s all about the shoes).

Later in the afternoon walking around the malls, I see the same gladiators. The gladiator shoe fashion trend came a few seasons ago but they were initially there since the ancient Roman time. Back then they were serious business but a bit limited to a more masculine look.

Many centuaries later, the gladiators are now in more flexible feminine styles which are infinitely more flattering to the legs and to fashion. They come in different styles such as; the small metallic version, others are ornate bejeweled sandals that go well with evening occasions but there are two main types; the high- heeled gladiators and flat gladiator sandals.

The high heeled gladiators have a very edgy look. Most of the heeled gladiators are accented with cool looking details like metallic studs, buckles, zippers and straps. New in the collection are the knee high gladiators and wedges. The wedges are a perfect alternative when you are thinking more of comfort, without sacrificing the ultra sassy appeal. They do great for the nice sunny days with floral dresses and outfits with feminine designs. The flat gladiator sandals are a substitute to flip flops; they give a sexy look compared to flip flops and are very versatile because they can be worn with a variety of outfits.

Apart from the fact that gladiators go with almost every outfit, they are also light and leave room to air the feet. The material used on them is durable therefore unlike other shoes they are longer lasting. When you consider your fashion sense, when you team your gladiators with a simple outfit; slim jeans and an elegant top or a dress top, they make you look extremely sizzling and sensual. Consider balance when you are putting together your outfit. Since gladiators exude an edgy, you can balance it out with delicate outfit colors like cream and nude colors.

As much as gladiators give your feet a great look and your outfit ensemble an even greater look, and you feel like a goddess every time you put them on and strut down the street, remember not to over wear them. Eventually when you wear gladiators for such a long period the metallic details and straps end up wearing out your feet and sometimes leaving permanent marks on your ankle or feet.

One last reminder is that when you wear gladiators you should also pay close attention to foot care, make sure your feet look presentable; a good occasional pedicure will work the magic.

Rome can be anywhere, so when you go to Rome…wear gladiators! That means take out that gladiator shoe and let the goddess in you come to life.

So we are seated in traffic and from afar we spot a traffic police coming towards our car for inspection. What immediately runs through everyone’s mind is to buckle their seat belts lest one is served with a fine even though this should be obvious; buckling your seat belt the minute you get into a car, for safety reasons. We quickly buckle our seat belts and smile naughtily at the police officer peeping through the window.

That incident last week reminded me of belts and how it seems like everywhere I turn I see someone has accessorized their outfit with them and neither does it look like anyone is forcing them too either. From jewelry belts to fabric belts to wide and thin belts, it’s interesting how these little numbers can significantly change your look. It doesn’t matter their size, shape, materials or the little details (jeweled, leather, unusual flower patterns on the buckle) on them, belts are known to compliment your look. They can make you look slimmer, adding an edgy chic to your outfit and at times these same belts can distract the attention from potential bad areas of your outfit. Belts have the fashion ability to transform shapeless outfits into bold and beautiful outfits that give your waistline a great look.

There are many types of belts to choose from; there are the wide statement belts. Now I’ve seen a lot of these doing the rounds. I’ve noticed them being worn with dresses and with that said they look great for party occasions and everyday wear. Some have very eye catching buckles which can come in various shapes like circles, rectangular and some buckles are either big bows or hooks. The wide statement belts are likened to kimono style sash belts or bands of fabric around the waist.

Green belt buckle

There are the thin belts which unlike the wide statement belts, go with anything. They especially look good with suits, dresses and sweater shirts and they don’t dominate the outfit like the wide statement belts. Other types of belts include jewelry belts mainly for evening outfits; they give a beautiful and sophisticated look and bring out the feminine touch. They are normally embellished with metal and stones. The fabric belt is another kind which has an added advantage because you can experiment different styles and knots which can be placed in different directions. These fabrics are like satin, suede, velvet or silk.

Belts divide the body into different parts and they are a great way to flatter your waist but you have to know how to wear them because it gives a different look with where it is placed. Some can be worn below the bust line; the likes of wide belts on dresses, or on the natural waistline in this case using the thin belts or low around the hips, this is mainly done with some wide belts made of fabric.

In most cases before you choose which kind of belt to wear, carefully consider your shape, height and waistline so that the belt does not distort your body shape.

The belt party has already started, you can’t be left behind, so choose your belt and buckle up!

Am I the only one who thinks that fashion in the 70’s was way cool? I was going through some old family albums and found some very interesting pictures of mum and her friends in the 70’s. I must admit, those were some good ol’ fashion days. I’m talking about the flared trousers, halter neck suits, bell bottoms, mini-skirts and the maxi dresses. Fast forward to 2010; the same fashion trends of the 70’s, like the mini dresses are slowly taking over the fashion scene.

Mini dresses have come and it seems they are here to stay. Yes we all love the trousers and hipsters and how they define our behinds but it’s time to embrace the mini dresses that helped describe our mothers as ‘Every Woman’. Mini dresses have a way of screaming out ‘I’m a darling!’ It gives one a bold and confident look with a playful and youthful demeanor.

There are so many ways to style your mini dresses to accommodate your personal style, body shape and give you the look you want. You have to consider your body type, this is very important. Just like other clothing items, when it comes to mini dresses you have to dress your body type; if you have a belly, it’s advisable to avoid high waist mini dresses because you will give the impression that you are ‘with child’ when you are not. For tall women, you have to make sure the mini dresses are not so short as to expose too much, meaning you can wear your mini dress over skinny jeans or with tights.

If you want to accentuate your curves and bring out the hour glass figure, you can try on a mini dress that defines your waist and separates your upper and lower body. If you want the attention to be on your chest area you can create that volume but wearing a mini dress with pleats. While if you want the mini dress to bring attention your lower half you can try on dresses with greater volume like mini-bubble dresses.

You should also consider the weather and occasion. These mini- dresses are great for the Saturday/Sunday playful warm weather. You can get one for that garden wedding party or for a day out shopping. For a garden or evening party you can wear that mini dress with chunky bracelets and wedges or heels to create the ultimate chic look. If you are a little shy about showing some leg you can always have on the mini dress with opaque tights or fierce ankle boots and a scarf or hat to enhance your look. The tights and boots can also do well in the cold weather.

When we talk about mini dresses we are referring to an unmoved trend that caters to everyone’s personal style and figure. You have plenty of options. You can decide to be the classy diva with a mini bubble dress for that evening party or a laid-back chic in the tube casual dress for a day out or a kimono wrap top dress for the ethnic look. You decide. Right now mini dresses are having their moment of fame in fashion, don’t just stand on the sidelines you too can join in and play DRESS UP!

A while ago, cramming all your essentials to the point of spilling over in that huge handbag was the norm of the day. Was that extra pair of shoes or that roll of tissue really necessary? How about the length of time, sometimes tens of minutes, it took you to locate your house keys or your ringing mobile phone that you had to spill everything on the floor just to find what you were looking for? Well, you can now wave bye bye to those days because it clutch time!

There are two things that a woman absolutely loves; her shoes and her bags. The era of oversized handbags came-and yes it’s no secret that it gave women an excuse to carry around a mobile wardrobe. Trendy clutch bags are now in fashion coming in interesting shapes and sizes that can complete and complement your outfit giving you the desired look. Many people choose clutches for their unique sizes, designs and colors.

There are different types of clutches. A convertible clutch is very versatile because it easily morphs from clutch, to tote, to shoulder bag. There is the hard case clutch that brings out a retro look. It will most likely have a sleek, satin or silk appearance. It’s best used for glamorous evening as purses or you can accessorize it with your formal attire for that sophisticated look. There is also the mini clutch which as its name suggests is quite ‘mini’. It is very small and has barely enough room for your lip gloss, keys, mobile phone and everything you want to squeeze in. This is more for style.

Some clutches are chained, others patterned or adorned with appealing details such as sequins, pearls or diamantes. It’s very important to note that a clutch can make or break your outfit; therefore there are a few guidelines you need to remember as you choose the right clutch for your outfit.

Since the clutch is small, there is a tendency to overfill it with all your handbag essentials; the lip gloss, your phone, wipes etc. This makes your clutch appear bulky. Resist the urge to fill it with everything in your closet. Keep it minimal, smooth and thin.

A clutch is not really for everyday use therefore you have to know the right occasion to accessorize it with your outfit. A clutch goes well with parties or special events, somewhere you don’t need to drag along that cumbersome handbag. These events go well with that little clutch bag.

When wearing hushed colors, you can have bright colored clutches in the same color scheme of your outfit. When your outfit has more vibrant colors you can choose a clutch with a hushed tone. Outfits with textured apparel will go well with clutch bags that are less busy or textured.

As much as we all need our oversized bags in different situations, a smaller bag is a great investment. The clutch bags though small make a bold fashion statement, so put away the big handbags; tis the season to be clutchy!

I know you must be wondering, what exactly is a ‘must have’? Well, let me take you back to last Friday; place-Maggies, time-4pm. I was out with a girlfriend for a quick coffee with creamy lemon cake before heading home. Usually this is the time of day when a lot of people (mostly ‘office’ working types) are walking in and out for coffee dates with post-mortem chit-chat sessions about the office politics and gossip.

As we were chatting away with my friend, this lady walked in standing at 5’5 maybe in her mid-twenties and judging from her grooming, her profession was not far from marketing. The room suddenly became less quiet with the horde of office girls at the next table were nudging each other to check out her (wait for this!)… her black platform heels. Yes, I thought it must have been the nice mini skirt suit with crisp white blouse but their eyes were fixated on her shoes. I have to admit it; she was looking quite sophisticated in those black platform heels. Unlike women not accustomed to walking in heels and had funny, limp-y strides, she walked with ease and comfort. I have to admit, as a low-heeled, sandals and flats wearer and non-believer of high heels and stilettos, I wanted to turn in my placards and reform immediately.

With platform heels you cannot help but love them! They have been a trend for a long while with the ability to wear these types of heels all year round. These heels can blend fabulously with almost everything; think of casual shorts, dresses, jeans, with tights or stockings. The fact that platform heels are very versatile can help you create whatever look you want. You may want to strike a professional look for the office that will definitely turn heads in the board room and leave everyone wondering how you make platform heels look so good. You can also don a casual look for a normal day or the weekend day or a sexy elegant look for a night out painting the town all sorts of colours. That is platform heels for you; when it comes to them you never run out of ideas.

Platform heels come in all imaginable colours from red, black, silver, pink to brown with a variety of materials-leatherette, suede, patent and pure leather just to name a few. The handiest of colours so far is black because it can match and blend with almost everything you own in your wardrobe. The platforms heels also have a host of exquisite designs; that means buckles, jewels, strapped or bowed adorn these heels; the choice is entirely yours. These designs can suit your tastes, changing moods, attitudes and different occasions.

When it comes to comfort the platform heels are better than high heels. You see, if you love high heels but find it hard to balance the thin soled, pointy heels then platform heels will work great for your balance. One of the greatest advantages of wearing platform heels is the stability they offer you; they add the inches in height if you are short and does not compromise you ease in walking.

Platforms were there in the 70’s disco-era and they don’t seem to be going anywhere soon; so join the club and buy some platform heels they are a MUST HAVE!

It’s mid-month and bad hair days continue to plague you every day as find your way to work or school or perhaps as you run errands. At the back of your mind it seems like you have no time or money to visit the salon. So, what do you do? Simply, just get a head wrap and cover that disaster on your head from the masses! At least that’s what I do. Frankly, I’ve had not-so good hair days with extremely horrible bad hair days and head wraps have been a real savior. Each time, I always strive to find a different, unique and stylish way to cover my un-presentable hair with a head wrap that screams out…’yes, it may look bad on the inside but it rocks on the outside!’

Yes, it is really that simple.

A majority of us believe head wraps are only used for religious purposes or protecting our do’s during unexpected rainy moments, and unfortunately it may also be your grandmother’s signature look. However these head wraps maybe all these things but are and can be very fashionable and versatile giving you casual, elegant, fashionable or practical look depending on how you decide to wear them, the fabric you use and how you choose to tie it.

For some, head wraps are a fashion statement; while others it lends a sense of identity-a way to express their personal style. I’m talking about the likes of India Arie, Erykah Badu or our own Orie Rogo Manduli; these are just some examples of personalities who bring out the best of head wraps.

Head wraps come in different shapes and sizes, the only difference been one’s preference. I see lots of women out in the streets donning head wraps giving an ethnic style; beautifully weaved around the head. Some are really big and may leave you wondering, if at some point the head wrap will fall off. Don’t let the huge sizes scare you, though comfort is equally important.

There is the handkerchief wrap which is the easiest to pull off; just fold a rectangular shaped cloth and tie it back folding it nicely behind the ears, and the scarf head wraps which bring about the sophisticated look; they look similar to the hijab. With the scarf head wrap, you can simply wrap a very long cloth around your head and then make a loop around your neck to bring a somewhat scarf look.

During my infamous bad hair days, I use various head wraps for emergency but they are more than the cloth you weave around your head when your pockets are singing the blues and you can’t get your hair ‘did’. Head wraps are authentic and unique so try it, wrap it!

I was at a chamaa meeting last week and it seemed like I spent most of my recess time leaning against the refreshment table. It’s not that I was waiting to see who would take the last of the appetizing black forest cake or for extra helpings, but I had a rather peculiar reason. You see, I had worn very uncomfortable platform pumps that were causing me to lose my balance. The lean against that table was my shameless disguise as I tried to find my balance. This went on for long and at some point I gave up on the uncomfortable platform pumps (or did them platform pumps give up on me?) and switched to my emergency sandals; the ones I carry along for days like these. The woman seated next to me gave me the ‘are you seriously gona wear sandals’ look and in response I gave her the ‘Can’t a woman wear sandals and still look good?’ stare!

You see, I’m not exactly your everyday ‘heels wearing’ type of girl. I’m almost six feet tall but it’s not even about the height and neither I’m I scared of the extra height. I actually kinda enjoy the top view of people’s heads; it’s about the comfort and the fact that sandals are very versatile. I can’t climb up and down the stairs at work in high heels but with sandals, I can comfortably bare the lack of a functioning elevator.

Well, I finally got tired of the love-hate relationship I had with heels and switched to nice comfy sandals. Now I wear sandals as often as possible depending on the occasion, the place and the weather. I find that many people still have the notion that sandals are too casual and it’s hard to look good in them. On the contrary, you can wear sandals and look fashionably good.

First of all, closed shoes hide a lot; so when you decide on sandals you have to kiss goodbye to dirty toenails and cracked nail polish. Normally when people look at you, they also look at the shoes, so with sandals, your feet are constantly under scrutiny. That means you have to pay close attention to foot care/hygiene. Frequent wearing of sandals exposes your feet to dirt that causes them to crack, so you have to scrub rough spots whenever you bathe. You can also opt for a pedicure on a frequent basis and/or polish your toe nails with colors that compliment your skin tone.

Secondly, sandals come in many sizes and styles. Wear a fitting pair in your size to avoid sandals that are too loose or too small. You’d be surprised at how the right size will make a whole lot of difference. This brings me to the third detail; choose the right type of sandals. Not every other sandal will go with your outfit e.g. wearing Jesus strappy sandals with your office wear-a definite no-no! Your choice of sandals should also be dictated by the occasion, the place and the weather; you do not want to be caught in sandals during the rainy season.

At the end of the day, sandals are great to wear, not just for comfort but because they offer a variety of designs and styles to match your preference and fashion sense. So it doesn’t matter if you don’t have model feet, you can still wear sandals and look good!

Have you ever walked out of the house and down the street or around town, glanced around only to find that you had an outfit similar to everyone else around you? At this point, you probably wished you were different and unique from the crowd.

You’ve heard number of times that in life it’s the little things that matter. This saying can easily find it’s backing in fashion whereby little details you add to your outfit can make or break your final look stand out.

How can you accessorize your outfits? Two words; Scarf It!

The scarf trend has caught on. Forget the days when we thought scarves were for our grandmothers and being ‘scarfed’ meant one was old-fashioned. Lately, however, the scarf has become a fashion statement with men and women alike are accessorizing their outfits with lovely scarves. From the extra-long scarves worn with skinny jeans that give a nice casual look to cowboy scarves with their tassels hanging, that have become an instant favourite with men, demonstrates how scarves may complete an otherwise dull outfit.

Scarves are versatile no matter what you have on; perhaps, add color to your outfit. A patterned or plaid scarf can spice up a plain outfit; or you can choose one color on the plaid scarf and match it with your outfit. You can also don neutral colors to let the scarf dominate.

When it comes to scarves, the weather doesn’t matter. The scarf has been commonly used to keep one warm during the cold weather. Did you know you can also wear the scarf like an afterthought? Just let it drape on your shoulders or wrap it around the shoulders for an evening party or night out. Alternatively, you can use the scarf like a necklace and loop it around your neck. It can also be used as a neck wrap where you loosely gather around your neck or wrap it until the ends are not seen, layer upon layer.

There is no sure way of wearing your scarf thus embracing different styles, patterns, texture, shape and trends are at your disposal for different looks. How you wear your scarf depends on your outfit and occasion. If you taking a trip to the local coffee house maybe wearing the scarf a necklace would be appropriate. If, on the other hand you are attending an evening party choosing the after-thought approach where the scarf drapes on your shoulders would go well with the occasion. Choosing the appropriate scarf for the occasion can be an inexpensive way of glamming up an otherwise boring where you can wear an elegant shawl, the scarf texture and shape; there are long shape scarves and also short elegant shawl style scarves.

Even men are wearing scarves; mainly the ‘Karma’ scarves have hot property and a favourite this year. Buddhist and Hindu priest wear them during prayer services.

Whenever I think of scarves Meryl Streep comes to mind. Her role as Miranda Priestly; the most powerful fashion magazine editor in the movie ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ epitomized scarfs as a must-have fashion accessory for any woman. Meryl wore her signature Hermes scarves with almost all her outfits. So, it doesn’t matter what outfit you plan to wear; Scarf It!

Dreadlocks used to represent anticonformity. They were initially a religious thing, with rastafarians and Mungiki. Then they became a feminist thing, a uniform for ladies who use Ms. After that, they became a visual banners for stylish types who preferred to go ‘natural’.

In my case, it’s the only do that works on my head. But I still like the idea of rebelling a little, which is why I try to keep them short. Try, because hair growth is very tempting. It’s like diamonds, but with shampoo.

As much as we dislike it, we are judged by how we look, what we wear, how we dress our hair. I think that’s partly why I’ve never replaced my nose ring. I’ve worn one since I was sixteen – partly for rebellion, partly for Tushauriane’s Esther, but mostly to look Nubian. Dark girls were hot back then; they still are. Plus, I was at the Plain Jane stage of growth; I thought the bling made me look pretty.

When I lost my nose ring at the pool some months back, I considered getting another one, but then I realised it wasn’t really necessary. I’m no longer the wild sixteen-year-old. Actually, I was never a wild sixteen-year-old, hence the nose ring; I needed some ruse to look crazy. And it wasn’t actually a ring, more like a microscopic gold stud. It looked more like glitter on my nose.

Anyway, I didn’t replace it because I’m allergic to other metals and gold is really expensive – the stud cost 900 bob in 1996! Plus, I’d gotten over my esteem issues, and I no longer needed to look crazy. Also, the stud had the worst habit of slipping off my nose during showers, beach trips, colds, and really humid days.

I suppose you could say I grew out of it, and the litty bitty hole in my nose still ups my ‘cool-and-crazy’ ante. There’s a funny thing about growing old that helps us grow up. I met this guy once, during blind date week… Let me explain. I spend a lot of time online, and meet a lot of people. One week, I decided to see all my online friends, so for seven days, I had three or four meetings a day with people I’d never physically met. It was quite … interesting.

This one guy stood out, and for a long time, I didn’t know why. I noticed later that it’s because he wasn’t trying. All my other dates had been self conscious, nervous, trying to make an impression. They wanted me to like them, so they showed me what they thought I wanted to see. And that can be exhausting, for both.

But this guy, he was comfy, easy, not tensed in any way. He was himself, or at least, he made a very good pretense of it. Either he didn’t care what I thought of him or…

I pointed this out to him, curious to find what the ‘…or…’ could be. He smiled and said, “It’s because I’m older.” I’m 28. He was 36.

I’ve hung out with guys as old as sixty, and they were just as nervous as any teenager. And I’ve spent time with boys who are twelve but have the wisdom of an octogenarian. So clearly, not all presence comes with age.

But there are some things that get easier when you’re older. You learn to accept yourself, to focus your strengths and weaken your … weaknesses. You learn to approach people with style and to deal with different sorts. You learn that you don’t have to break down a door to get into a locked building.

And in my case, you learn that 20 carrats of bling in your nose just might get you noticed, but it does not make you pretty.

I suppose I still could get that stud for my nose, but I’m glad that I’ve matured enough to know that I don’t have to.

There are two kinds of hairdressers – those who do what you want … and those who don’t.

Hairdressers are artists, and a good beautician is one who makes you happy. You may not like their dress sense, you may not like their attitude, you may not even like their name.

You may not like the way they yank your head back and forth, or the way they talk about clients, or how they patronise you and your salon-mates, or their dismissive tone when they tell your sister ‘Please stop distracting her, I’m trying to work here’ [and swiftly banish said sister to the corner with a two-year-old Cosmo right in the middle of some juicy family gossip].

But when they are finished with your hair, you will be grinning ear to ear.

Now, salon-ing, like all other arts, requires talent. Some coiffeurs have it naturally, others learn by aping, others went to Pivot Point, others plaited grass, bought a blow-drier and rented a room.

But the true hair expert is the one that can think. They can look at your head and decide what suits it best. And even better, they can take your ridiculous suggestion, tweak it here and there, and make it work.

For a while now, I’ve wanted to cut my hair. Don’t ask me why, I have no idea; most girls would kill for what grows on my head.

Let me explain. I have seven-year-old dreads.

First, they aren’t quite seven years old, because somewhere around year three, I had to shave them clean for a KQ interview. And second, my hair is very springy, so instead, it looks four years long. Two years actually, since it is four years long. A neighbour started growing hers in my second year, and … well … hers are now twice as long as mine, so yeah.

Also, my hair is coarse and thick, which means it’s useless for anything else. I caused hairdressers grief for years spending four hours with TCB, World of Curls, Dark and Lovely and Revlon on my head … with no visible results. But when I grow my dreads, they matt in three weeks or less.

So anyway, I decided to cut my dreads. I missed the punkish boy look from the days they were starting out.

Three successive salon-ists refused to shave me. The first claimed to be a nazirite and could not touch razors. The second stood at the back of my head and snipped a little, then tucked the hair into a bob to make it look short. The third simply refused to cut such luxurious hair.

But yesterday I tried a new salon on a friend’s recommendation, and even though she was mortified, the lady agreed to cut my hair.

I expected it to be a long, tedious process as she made a layered cut or whatever they call that hairdo.

Instead she looked at my head, viewed the different angles, then grabbed five tufts of hair and snipped it. I was a bit confused … it didn’t seem very … professional. Plus, she placed the bits of hair in front of me saying ‘Imagine, that’s your hair! Yaani I feel pain cutting it.’

I closed my eyes for a few seconds and only opened them when she was done.

Then I smiled.

In just two minutes, she had produced the exact look I wanted! All I had said was ‘I want it as short as possible’. That’s it, no further instructions. And she had made it look so easy! She wasn’t happy about it, but I was ecstatic! I couldn’t stop grinning.

Of course the cut was done before retwisting, and it produced an entirely different look once the hair was done. The salonists seemed a little worried because it looked so … different. They were half afraid would cry, or throw a bitchfit, or worse.

Instead, I let her fold the hair into a Beatles cut. Then I tugged it with my fingers to change the shape and tucked a few behind my ears. I could see their faces light up as the hair took form.

I left that salon a very happy girl, with my hair all tiny, frazzled and tomboyish; and the hairdressers were pleased that I spoke so highly of them. Frankly, I was just glad they’d taken my bad idea and made it look so pretty.

Two lessons I have learnt today. One, I will always, always, always go to Exposé.

And two, I will never, ever, ever cut my hair again.

I think.

Fashion is an interesting thing. Being a girl, I know that an item can look perfectly good in my home mirror, then look ridiculous once I’m out on the street. Lots of times I’ve walked past those reflective windows at the bank, snuck a peek at myself, and wondered what possessed me to leave the house looking like that.

And it can’t be entirely blamed on the glass distortion factor.

An issue that bothers girls a lot is the hitching skirt. You leave the house in a pretty little dress that sits nicely on your knees. Then you get into a matatu and realise that when you sit, the skirt rides uncomfortably high. You then look for anything from handbags to scarfs to newspapers to protect the bare … um … legs. The rest of the day is spent in relative discomfort trying to pull your stray skirt down, while ‘people’ laugh and tease your false modesty. After all, they say, you knew how short the skirt was when you wore it.

Except you didn’t. Really.

My trouble yesterday was a little different. See, I’ve always liked the gypsy look. The pretty spanish tops with a billowing a-line skirt and matching boots has always done it for me. So when a few days ago I found the cutest red checked top at Tusky’s, I was somewhere above cloud nine. Yesterday I paired it with my khaki skirt and industrial leather boots and totally rocked the look.

Except for one teeny tiny problem.

You see, the top can be worn on the shoulders or off. I prefer to wear it off. Except that when your shoulders are well oiled and smooth and soft and supple, clothing tends to, well, to slip. But not in the way you’d imagine.

The image that comes to mind is of the blouse slipping seductively down to reveal a little too much cleavage, yes?

No.

You see, my blouse wasn’t slipping down. It was slipping up.

Instead of lying snugly on my chest and revealing a little bit of shoulder, the blouse kept riding back up around my neck.

If you think it’s funny seeing a girl trying to tug her skirt down, picture one trying discreetly to pull her puff sleeves off her shoulders and down her arms and … chest.

It’s a wonder I didn’t get arrested for stripping in public.

All in a day’s walk. Pun fully intended.

I still rocked the look though…

Here we are, at the end of another decade. I can’t believe 10 years has just flown by in a blink of an eye! I still remember the hype of the coming millennia when everybody was worried about what the Y2K bug will do to us – how it will shut everyone down. That was 1999 and now, 10 years has flown by. While we are left to ponder what have we achieved in the last 10 years, let’s take a look back at the trends we loved, hated and can’t get enough of……. Do you agree?

1) Bangles
Stack ‘em and stack ‘em high was the wrist rule of the beginning of the 21st century. Bangle sets were plentiful from plastic to gold. Accessories fiend rocked them with both casual and dressy ensembles. I will personally attribute them to the rise of Bollywood movies where bangles were part of the set up from decades ago.

2) UGGs
Although there is nothing sexy about them, women stand behind their UGGs, professing their love for the sheepskin fleece that keep their toes so warm and nice. Ask Hollywood and I bet most stars will swear by owning at least a pair of UGG.

3) Suggestive Butts
Started off with Juicy Couture – prints on the rear of sweat pants became a hit. Whether they said “Juicy” or “Pink”, we just couldn’t help but turn our heads to read the messages on the bums of Juicy Couture and Victoria’s Secret sweatpants.

4) Labels
Labels have long been a must-have if we didn’t want to feel like we’re missing out on the big scene. It allows us to feel like we’re walking in the midst of the high-society for a while and this decade has seen the birth of businesses dealing with designer bags rental which made it affordable for fashion mavens to carry high-priced arm candy.

5) Leggings
Many have a love-hate relationship with good ol’ leggings, like me but most can’t deny their comfortable properties. People love them so much; companies have even started to manufacture the leggings-and-jeans hybrid known as jeggings.

6) Skinny Jeans
They were alive and well during the ‘80s in the acid-washed and stretchy form. But come 2003, they were given a chic makeover for fashionitas. I just love skinny jeans – they come in handy on most occasions! Have them in various colours and pair them up with pumps, heels, sneakers or boots to achieve different looks for different functions and different seasons.

7) Ballet Flats
One of my favourite must-haves. It’s the trend that fashionitas are most thankful of, including me. Step aside sky-high heels, we’ve been given the break of comfort with the lovely ballet flat. Once upon a time, sneakers were the only comfy footwear available, but thanks to Tory Burch and Cole Haan, fabulous flats have been made available to us that go with our ever-so-chic wardrobe. I just can’t even start to wonder how I lived without them before!

  Vests
Vests came and went in the early ‘90s (I remember buying 2 or 3 vests but can’t remember wearing them at all cause they went so quickly!) but they have reappeared much stronger this decade than ever. From menswear-inspired to boyfriend knits, the sleeveless outwear has become a wardrobe must.

9) Boho Chic
Fashionitas and non-fashionitas alike have gotten behind the hippie-esque garbs in the form of skirts, head scarves and maxi dresses. Although, we have no idea how this trend came about. It just came out of nowhere overnight! Hmm….

10) Cinched Waists
The start of the 21st century marked a lot of waist-cinching with thick black belts (think Lindsay Lohan). From dresses to sweaters, this decade, we belted practically everything.

11) Oversized Shades
We might not be movie stars but we certainly dress like one with these oversized shades. As if paparazzi would be snapping photos of us around town (think Paris Hilton & Victoria Beckham)? As it turns out, we just love the way it looks! Mysterious gal……

It is not always easy to spot replica Louis Vuitton Handbags, especially when many buyers are unfamiliar with the genuine designer goods. It gets even scarier when the advisers in LV boutiques themselves cannot tell the difference! It has happened to a friend’s friend who, in Australia, bought a genuine LV bag and then bought a top-grade LV replica. She brought the replica back to LV saying she wants an exchange for a different design. At the end of the day, 1 to girlfriend, 0 to LV. She ended up with 2 genuine handbags for the price of 1!

Thank goodness for us, there are ways to spot a replica. It comes down to us to spot them and not be a victim of replicas.

Note the tag on the handle. On genuine Louis Vuitton goods there is only one outside stitching, whereas a fake will feature two white stitching outlines on the tag on the handle.

Take a look at the buckle shape. A genuine Louis Vuitton bag features a round silver buckle. Replica Louis Vuitton handbags may include a square silver buckle.

Examine the interior. Counterfeiters often neglect the interior of the bag. An authentic Louis Vuitton bag will have red or honey-colored canvas lining, fine microgram textile, cross-grain leather, or microfiber suede. If your Louis Vuitton is lined with cheap tan or brown suede, it is more than likely a replica.

Pay attention to the hardware. Replica Louis Vuitton handbags will often use painted gold plastic for hardware. However, authentic Vuitton goods feature gold or brass metal hardware.

Plastic is not used as a material in the crafting of Louis Vuitton bags.

And finally, although this final identifying factor is rarely helpful at the time of purchase, genuine Louis Vuitton handbags are created to stand the test of time. The natural cowhide leather used in the design of Vuitton bags is oxidizing and will turn a dark golden honey color over time. Replica Louis Vuitton handbags will not experience this color change because they are frequently crafted from plastic.

There are many other ways to spot a replica however the above the are the most simple and quick way to spot a replica in a shop, especially when you do not have all day comparing your checklist with the bag before you get hauled up by the security guard.

The way you dress can help you
I know many of us have had to ask some of the strangest questions, especially to men. Some go like this; how do I look with this dress? Does this pant make me look fat? The better majority of us try asking these questions to our reflections in the mirror. But I hate to believe that all of us women we tailored to be worried about the same thing, I mean there must be something we can for sure blame. Don’t you think some clothes actually make us look bigger and fatter? Fashion experts like me tend to believe so. There are many opinions about this. What makes you look fat and what can take 10 pounds and a few inches off your waist? Among the many recommendations that the experts keep repeating on TV programs and books, I believe that the following work the best:

1. Positive focus
If you are overweight (later on I will teach you how you can know whether you are or not), first of all, do not feel bad about your body. You would be nothing without your body and it hell supports you when walking, talking, breathing, so love it. This therefore does not mean that you get a license to eat unhealthy and not workout but your weight and your perception about yourself should not be related. You have to focus on the positive aspects of you: your smile, your eyes, your waist, your legs, etc. Accentuate the positive and disguise the negative. When you flaunt it, people will notice it and when you shun it people will repulse it too.

2. Love color and do not be afraid to experiment with it
Black is not the only option to look slender. Color and variety can help you look thinner. If you select a monochromatic look that goes well with your skin tone, you will make people look at your glowing face. Do not be afraid of color; the secret is to use one color in many different tones and you have created a monochromatic look. Be sure not to look like a rainbow though!!!

3. Elongate your body
If you are not very tall, and most of us are not, try to elongate your body by using pants that cover your shoes. This is a tip my mother gave me. If your pants cover your shoes, your legs look longer and you look taller plus your butt looks sexier. Why do you think ladies wear the crazy heels in the X-rated movies?

4. Do not use clothes that do not fit
Many women think that if the clothes are tight or loose they will look thinner. This is not true; they will only look fatter, instead not to mention shabby. Your clothes have to fit your body; neither oversized nor undersized does the trick. You can try finding a good tailor for your office clothes and even when you buy second hand clothes, you can still add a touch of your personality in your clothes.

5. Not too tight
On the negative side, tight clothes only make us look like a sausage and like my friend Laura Kote says, saving up for goodbye cellulite is hard!! – You look so stuffed that some of the fat comes out and calls attention. That is precisely what we do not want: attention in the wrong places. Be careful not to wear tops that show your tummy from down this makes you look pregnant, instead try wearing tops that come right below waist line.

6. Not too loose clothes
Oversized clothes may hide the imperfections but it does not do justice to your positive points and you will look not only bigger, but also without any shape. You are highlighting the very things you want to hide. Forget big T-shirts and blouses without any fitting.

7. Avoid extra material around your tummy
Pants with pleats, elastic waist or string waists are only adding volume to your waist. Same applies to skirts. Do I need to add anything here… guess not!!

8. Be careful with accessories
Accessories can also make you look fatter or skinnier: if you have a tummy, large belts should be avoided, because you are putting attention on your tummy. The same way necklaces too close to your face should be used carefully if you have a double chin, because it will accentuate the chin; longer necklaces have the opposite effect. If you are fat, avoid chunky necklaces as these make your neck look shorter and you end up looking like Barney from The Flintstones.

Now you know some things to watch out for when you are wondering if that great outfit makes you look fat.
