When we were young we had dreams and ambitions that were boundless. “I wana be a lawyer, teacher, doctor, pilot etc” were the songs that we used to sing merrily with a clear mental image of yourself as a profession in your dream field. Let’s just say 90% didn’t turn out as expected. Life with its usual irony took over and we all learned the hard way that not all dreams come true.
Some of us gave up along the way, some passed away- RIP and some just well sunk into despair consequently hard drugs, depression etc. Some had it all planned out to the T, high school, to college/Law School etc yet they found themselves in college, yes, but in an entirely different field from the one they had envisioned. That’s life, it has a way of squashing your dreams into a million shards that live you dazed and desolate.
Can our dreams still come true?
Reading Gifted Hands by Ben Carson would be a good start, if that doesn’t psych you up, I don’t know what will. How do you explain a young boy who we in Kenya would call a dunderhead become such a celebrated Neurosurgeon? With encouragement from his mom, he followed his dreams of becoming a Psychiatrist which propelled him to greater heights, to the man he is today. He never gave up on his dreams faced by the challenges of poverty and am sure discrimination. He simply went for it!
There is a verse in the Bible that says something like- hold on to that vision because no matter how long, it shall come to pass. We only need to have the focus. Focus on that image you’ve always had and work towards it or die trying, trust me you will feel much better than giving up on it all together.
Each one of us has the potential to succeed. We have the brains, if only we knew our potential, how limitless we are. Look around you and find that inspiration you need. Find a successful person and talk to them, ask them where they came from and how they made it. You will be amazed by what you will discover and learn a thing or two about chasing that seemingly elusive dream of yours.
So dream on and have faith that one day it will happen. Don’t dream small, dream big and wake up, shake the sleep off and do something about it!
God doesn’t require us to succeed; he only requires that you try- Mother Teresa
